Is Blogging Dead?

Blogging is dead.

Right? It’s all about the video because nobody reads anymore and video has everything our short attention spans demand.

In the U.S. within the same five-year span, video has risen in popularity and surpassed blogs in searches.

However, blogs are still viable marketing channels with WebTribunal reporting there are more than 600 million blogs out of 1.9 billion websites worldwide. Collectively, these blogs generate 6 million posts daily with WordPress and Tumblr being the most popular platforms.

And there is plenty of evidence that blogging is still a strategic means of communication and can make a huge difference in SEO, audience engagement, prospecting, thought leadership, inbound marketing, and more.

In my own company, my blog has been around for nearly 14 years and I can cite examples of why it is a pillar of my SEO strategy that helps me get word-of-mouth and search-sourced clientele every year.

And just so you don't think I’m completely married to words alone; I evolved my blog into incorporating playable video and audio into many of my posts.

If you do it right, you can reap the benefits of SEO enhancement, building authority, and even making a few pennies here on Medium.

Tips for Starting a Successful Blog

Choose a niche. What are you passionate about? What do you know a lot about? Once you’ve chosen a niche, focus on creating content that will appeal to your target audience.

Write great content. Your blog posts should be well-written, informative, and engaging. Take the time to research your topic and write in a clear and concise style, just like you do here on Medium, right?

Promote your blog. Once you’ve started writing blog posts, you need to promote your blog so that people can find it. Share your posts on social media, submit them to directories, and reach out to other bloggers in your niche.

Post consistently. Aim for two to four posts per week to enhance your investment. It results in the highest gains in traffic per dollar spent.

Be patient. It takes time to build a successful blog. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results overnight — as I said, my blog has been around for nearly 14 years, and I’m pretty sure it didn’t help my SEO, etc. significantly for at least a couple of years consistently posting original content. My blog for my novels and other writing, which I just started a few months ago, has yet to create a spike in my traffic numbers, but it will. Just keep writing great content and promoting your blog, and you’ll eventually start to see traffic and engagement.

And for Pete’s sake, keep the rules of the road for Medium success in mind.

Blogging isn’t dead — it’s not even on life support. It’s just an evolving medium if you’ll pardon the pun.
